It may be too smooth for some who demand a bit more meat but there should be enough here to keep both camps happy. However style is important here and the film has lots of it very cool and very smooth. Overall this is better than some of the genre because it does feel like it has more substance than the films where style is everything. Allen has a tiny role and Washington, Zahn and Guzmán are all good value in supporting roles. It's interesting to se Brooks in a role that isn't a sub-Woody Allen role and likewise to see Farina play anything but a mobster. Rhames is solid in support and Cheadle is very enjoyable. She isn't a diva here and gives a winning performance (being really sexy here helps too!). I hate Lopez with a passion but this is one of her best films and she is very good in it. His character may not get a full examination but then that's not really whats on offer here. Clooney is effortlessly cool in the lead and is probably the perfect choice for laid back cool roles (see Ocean's 11). The dialogue is all good and the film takes it's time over things rather than feeling like it's in a rush to get somewhere. The film is pretty violent and tough at times but remains cool and breezy throughout. The two stories drive each other and make the film feel very entertaining and carries it easily across a running time that had concerned me at first (something about that 120 mark isn't there?). Happily it works and isn't confusing Sonenberg giving a different feel to times past as opposed to the heavier fuller colour of the present story.
The plot here is potentially complex, with flashbacks telling two parts of the same story at the same time. Step up Get Shorty and Out of Sight to fill that need. With Pulp Fiction making snappy dialogue cool again the studios wanted something that would work for them too. There was a time when Elmore Leonard adaptations were all the rage and everyone wanted one.
Locked in the car both he and she (Karen) develop a bond that continues even when Karen is put on the case to catch Foley and return him to jail.
Foley escapes from jail seeking revenge on Ripley but during the breakout he and his accomplices are forced to take a US Marshall hostage. His last time in jail he and his friends met Dick Ripley, a businessman who claimed to have a fortune in diamonds hidden in his house. Unfortunately he is caught and sent down. Frustrated by his attempts to get a regular job and go straight he walks out of a meeting and robs the nearest bank.
